Robots can Provide Therapy for Children with Autism

Having an intelligent robot for a friend is definitely one of Sheldon Cooper’s life-long dream and researchers from Vanderbilt University are making this dream a reality. What’s even more amazing is that the robots that they are developing will serve as ‘teachers’ for people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

The NAO (pronounced as ‘now’) robots are equipped with sensors and cameras to help children with ASD develop joint attention and social skills. This is an exciting development since recent statistics indicate a 78% increase in people being diagnosed with Autism. At the moment, the researchers are focusing on using the robots as therapy agents for children.
